BACKGROUND & HISTORY
Sophie Barnes, born Annabelle Blackwell, knows who and what she is, unlike most of the agents within her division. Born and raised in the mountains of Oregon, Annabelle learned spells and incantations from her mother and grandmother at an early age. She never had a particularly obvious power, like telekinesis or the ability to control fire. Instead, she had more of an intuition for magic, a kind of sixth sense. Annabelle always knew when magic was nearby. And in a world where magic was still very much a hidden secret, this kind of ability was sought after by a private, federal organization. Sophie was “recruited” at the age of nineteen.
The agency put her through college (at least, their own version of it) and trained her for four years on everything a secret agent should be fluent in: languages, intelligence reconnaissance, combat, and undercover operations. Her first mission was at twenty-three and she more than succeeded, earning a spot on the agency’s supernatural and mystical occurrences division. Shortly after, she completed a mission with fellow agent Jack Rogers. They butted heads, but completed the job without a hitch. Annabelle’s successes made her a valuable asset to the agency. And since her loyalty never proved to be a threat, they allowed her to keep her memories. Well…most.
To this day, Annabelle doesn’t know why she joined, effectively providing a mole within the safety net of her own people. Why does she infiltrate witches and provide information for their imprisonment (and in some instances, such as the case of the US President’s safety, assassinate)? Besides “because the agency told me to,” Annabelle doesn’t know her motivation. It’s not about money or recognition. Not even hatred of magic. But these thoughts are what lead to deprogramming so Annabelle quickly dismisses them.
The agency already has intel in Siren Cove in the form of powerhouse agent Jack Rogers. However, with the recent suspicious death of the town’s mayor and a higher than usual buzz of supernatural activity, heads of the agency decided they needed eyes and ears higher up. So Annabelle Blackwell became Sophie Barnes, MA in public relations and three years of experience in political office settings. The now deceased mayor’s 73 year old assistant has “retired” and Sophie hired in her place effective immediately. She will serve as the new mayor’s personal assistant.
PERSONALITY
Personality isn’t really an asset in the agency as much as the ability to fake one. Annabelle is whoever she is told to be, as far as the agency is concerned. As a partner though, Annabelle is competitive and teases them once she's comfortable.
In the case of Sophie, she is an intelligent, 26 year old professional who has an interest in organizing the schedules and being the right-hand-man of whatever political leader she is in charge of. She’s quick, efficient, serious, and assertive in the workplace. Outside of work, Sophie likes to rub elbows. After all, social mixers are a part of the political game. She will make friends with all walks of life, providing they offer some kind of information pertinent to her mission or to her pseudonym. To the outsider, she’s a dedicated city employee who may be a little on the cold side at first.
OPINION OF THE RIVALRY
The agency did not give one; therefore she does not have one. Sophie will not care unless it affects the mayor. Sophie will think it's stupid.
LIFESTYLE
Being the mayor’s assistant, Sophie will live accordingly. While the apartment will be her home, it will only act as a place to sleep and invite “friends” over that Sophie makes. Annabelle’s work will be conducted in an abandoned cabin on the outskirts of town that only she and Jack will know of.
As the mayor’s assistant, Sophie’s life will revolve mostly around them, whoever is elected. She keeps their schedule, makes appointments, speaks with the press – basically does everything she can to keep the mayor from snapping under the pressure of a combustible town like Siren Cove, which is already on the edge. In reality, Annabelle will use her position to gain intelligence on Siren Cove’s magical division, learning their laws, important figures, and who is the largest threat.
POWERS & ABILITIES
Annabelle’s powers are based on intuition. She senses magic (with the exception of powerful cloaking spells) and feels when something is amiss. Per agency regulations for witches, Sophie has a small tattoo on her left shoulder blade, imbued with magic that keeps her identity safe and serves as a tracking device for the agency. She is not protected from all magic, but at least if she’s caught, no one can track her back to the agency.
